Customer Question

My husband has been constipated for 2-3 days. He is 79. We are vegans and eat a very healthy diet. He hasn't had this kind of
constipation in five to six years. Tonight we tried a fleet enema after two tablespoons of Phillips Milk of Magnesia didn't work. I have also had him drink warm prune juice. He is tender in the rectum area. Should we wait and see if all these attempts will produce a movement or should we go to the emergency room now? He is resting comfortably.

Hi there,

This is Dr Basu, experienced Internal Medicine Specialist.

I am here to address your concerns and provide great service.

Rectal tenderness can be due to the inflammation called proctitis.

However fever also present besides worsening pain.

Flett's enema also can cause rectal pain.

Another possibility can be bowel obstruction.

Your husband can try miralax and bisacodyl 2 tablets together --both over the counter.

If no bowel movement by tomorrow, then he should go to the ER.

Best wishes,

We took the doctors advice. We ended up taking the Miralax powder in prune juice, again,. the next day and then a bowl of oatmeal. Your advice worked. He was able to have a major bowel movement and we avoided going to the ER. Thank you.
