Hello,
Welcome to Just Answer and thanks for your question. I'm so sorry it was unanswered for so long. Answers provided are for informational use only and don't confer patient-provider relationship.
If he isn't in any pain, then this just may be an allergy or irritation. Ice applied for 20 minutes 3-4 times per day can help, as will an antihistamine. The newer antihistamines like loratadine (Claritin) or cetirizine (Zyrtec) will make him less drowsy than older ones like diphenhydramine (Benadryl).
If he has pain, acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve) can help. If he isn't better in 24 hours, please have him see his doctor, or if he develops tooth pain, see his dentist.
Please let me know if you have questions or concerns.
All the best,
Schuyler
