Dr. wants to prescribe Xifaxan, not flagyl. Will this treat giardia?
Yes it will. So he believes it is Giardia?

He still doesn't know. I'm not better and this is day #9. O & P and h. pylori stool cultures still aren't in.

I just wanted to make sure that it should take care of it, if it is giardia (which I think it might be). What am I to expect on this medication? My doctor isn't very good at getting back with me.

What's your diet and fluid intake like?
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

I have to force myself to eat because I have absolutely no appetite. I'm keeping up on my fluids by drinking Powerade.

Well the Xifaxin covers Giardia and some other infectious colitis bugs so it should help but have you started it yet?
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

No, I will be going into town and pick it up this afternoon. Will this medication make me sick? As in nausea? When should I expect to start feeling better/have an appetite back/normal stools?

OK. No, it shouldn't make you sick and it may take at least two days for it to kick in. Let me know how you do

Thanks. I'll keep you updated.

Are you sure this will work for giardia? From what I've read/heard it only treats E. Coli infections. My stool culture did not show a bad type of E. coli according to my doctor, so I'm wondering why he put me on this.

So it works "in vitro" against giardia?

That just means that it kills the giardia in a petri dish. It is also effective in vivo--in the body itself

Thanks Doc. Hope I didn't offend you by questioning this.
