This answer was rated:

mY lipid panel was
total 185
Tri 93
LDL 110
LDL 56
I have had double bypass 2009 and both carotid arteries done one in 1995 and one in 2010
i was taking statins and had bad reactions on them after two years tried two different kinds and made me really tired and bad reactions with muscles in my legs
I believe the last lipid test I remember two years ago while i was on statins was HDL was 80 and LDL was 45
I have been taking MEga Beta Sitosterol in place of statins for 6 months
does these readings above sound bad on this last one done ??
I have been trying to eat right just every once in while I will have a small steak and never more than teaspoon of butter a day if that and use olive OIl
My blood pressure is 120 over 60 heartrate 70
Thank you

Hi there,

This is Dr. D.J., experienced Internal Medicine Specialist.

I am here to address your concerns and provide great service.

Dr. D.J. :

Your cholesterol panel does not look bad.

Dr. D.J. :

Your LDL should be around 70.

Dr. D.J. :

But 110 is not a bad number since you cannot tolerate statin.

Dr. D.J. :

And other cholesterol lowering medications do not provide any benefit by lowering cholesterol.

Dr. D.J. :

So, you can continue with healthy diet and lifestyle.

Customer:

So I need to stop the once in while steak and butter and exercise more?? is 110 bad for the problems I have had

Dr. D.J. :

Yes correct

Dr. D.J. :

If possible.

Customer:

is 110 bad

Dr. D.J. :

You can consider niacin 50 to 100 mg daily to help with your cholesterol.

Dr. D.J. :

No it is not bad.

Dr. D.J. :

But it should be lower.

Customer:

can you get niacin over the counter

Customer:

and is there any bad effects from it??

Dr. D.J. :

yes it is over the counter

Customer:

any interactions with other meds?? or bad side effects?? take it in morning with breakfast??

Dr. D.J. :

niacin can cause hot flushes, stomach upset commonly.

Dr. D.J. :

at low dosage it should be safe.

Dr. D.J. :

Also discuss with your doctor.

Customer:

Yes I will I do not see cardio for a month so was wondering what i could do to bring it down some thank you

Dr. D.J. :

Watch your diet, increase fiber intake like benefiber,.

Customer:

Ok guess i can cut out my one a month vanilla milkshake too but it will hurt

Customer:

I eat lots of fruit like oranges and grapes that should help some shouldn't it

Customer:

oh yes my glucose fasting was 88 that is good huh

Dr. D.J. :

yes all these are good.

Customer:

and how about low fat popcorn that is my favorite Will tha help on fiber and also does it raise your cholesterol

Dr. D.J. :

yes it can raise your cholesterol also --so no low fat pop corn.

Dr. D.J. :

just corn should be fine

Customer:

popcorn ??

Customer:

don't like corn

Dr. D.J. :

better to avoid for now

Dr. D.J. :

see these things would have been possible with a statin.

Customer:

The fiber you are speaking of does that help with cholesterol and if so why

Dr. D.J. :

But since you cannot tolerate, there needs to be some sacrifices.

Dr. D.J. :

Yes it does.

Dr. D.J. :

Fibers lower cholesterol absorption in the intestine.

Customer:

thank you very much for your time i will be leaving feedback as does the Beta Sitosterol ?? doesn't it I take one before each meal 375 mg each

Customer:

to help lower absorption

Dr. D.J. :

Beta sitosterol also helps to lower your cholesterol.

Dr. D.J. :

So you can continue with that.

Dr. D.J. :

You can even increase the dose as tolerated.

Customer:

thank you I will work more on this I am in no worry about already clogging my arteries with the 110 am I

Dr. D.J. :

no that is not likely.

Customer:

thank you you have a great weekend

Dr. D.J. :

very welcome

Dr. D.J. :

you too
