My son has a right swollen ankle and left is slightly swollen

This answer was rated:

My son has a right swollen ankle and left is slightly swollen and painful to walk on. My guess its from wearing flip flops a long time yesterday.

He works (tomorrow) on his feet for 10 hours on concrete. Should he wrap his ankles?
He has already taken advil and iced and elevated them. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you for your question,

I’m Dr. Saha and I’ll try to help you.

Is there any redness, increased temperature there?

When did right ankle swell?

Did he consult doctor for right ankle?

Was any test taken?

Does he have any past illness?

Customer: replied 3 years ago.

No redness or increased temp.

began swelling last eve. both swollen but right worse

No doctor consult

No past illness or medications

Thank you Deb, for the information,

Overwork or strenuous unaccustomed activity can cause injury or sprain to the tendons.

However, it is unusual to have both the ankles swollen at the same time from excessive activity.

I would suggest to get him examined by doctor.

Other causes like arthritis, fascitis needs to be checked for.

Initial treatment usually consists of what are you doing already.

Pain medicines like NSAIDs, icing, rest, elevation are good.

He should give rest to the joint till the pain & swelling subside.

Repeating the activity can make it worse.

He can use ace wraps to support the ankle.

I hope this information helps.

My goal is to provide you with excellent service today. If there’s anything else I can do, please let me know.

Would Epsom salts help? Can he take 4advill at once for pain? Also, should he wait and wrap ankles b 4 he goes to work?
Epsom salt can be used.

We usually advise 2 Advil at a time as an OTC medicine.

If the doctor feels by physical examination, then higher doses can be prescribed.

If the pain is more, then 4 hours after Advil alternately Tylenol can be taken.

Wrapping ankle while walking will be helpful.

If the pain and swelling persist, then he should see doctor before going to work.

Well, it seems the left ankle is better after elevating it this afternoon. He now says the left ankle started bothering him last eveningand he shifted his weight to the right foot and then it began swelling and has remained for 24 hours.

How long is the ice effective after the initial swelling begins?

Ice is helpful during first few days of injury or inflammation.

Tell him to take rest as much as possible keeping both legs elevated.

Advil can be taken 6-8 hourly after food.
