I have high cholestrol, and I saw an RD who suggested no-flush

This answer was rated:

I have high cholestrol, and I saw an RD who suggested no-flush nician. However, in researching I read several articles that the no-flush wasn't effective in fighting high cholestrol (only the regular niacin).

Does the no-flush version help with cholestrol?

Hi there,

I am Mysticdoc, experienced Internal Medicine Specialist.

I am here to help you with your concerns.

mysticdoc :

Niacin is used if you have high triglycerides and or low HDL level.

mysticdoc :

Do you know your cholesterol level?

mysticdoc :

Did you try any other cholesterol lowering medication?

Customer:

I know my cholestrol is 370 - but I was eating a very low carb, high fat diet, so I think that made the number so high. They are mailing me the results, but I am unsure of my LDL and HDL and triglycerides (although I was told the LDL was high). They wanted me to go on a statin, but I wanted to try to get it lower without one, since I am young and otherwise healthy.

mysticdoc :

Ok

mysticdoc :

In case of high LDL niacin will not work that well.

mysticdoc :

You are better off taking a statin at low dose.

mysticdoc :

Pravastatin can be started at 20 mg daily dosage.

mysticdoc :

Your cholesterol is very high and that suggests high LDL.

mysticdoc :

Statins are the only ones which showed good benefits with lowering LDL.

mysticdoc :

Other medications like niacin are not that beneficial.

Customer:

I know a lot of people have side effects with statins (my mother had muscle aches). Are there certain ones that are less likely to cause side effects?

mysticdoc :

Pravastatin is less likely to cause muscle and liver problem.

mysticdoc :

And low dosage, this is safe to use.

Customer:

Great, thanks for your help

mysticdoc :

very welcome
