Niacin is used if you have high triglycerides and or low HDL level.
Do you know your cholesterol level?
Did you try any other cholesterol lowering medication?
I know my cholestrol is 370 - but I was eating a very low carb, high fat diet, so I think that made the number so high. They are mailing me the results, but I am unsure of my LDL and HDL and triglycerides (although I was told the LDL was high). They wanted me to go on a statin, but I wanted to try to get it lower without one, since I am young and otherwise healthy.
In case of high LDL niacin will not work that well.
You are better off taking a statin at low dose.
Pravastatin can be started at 20 mg daily dosage.
Your cholesterol is very high and that suggests high LDL.
Statins are the only ones which showed good benefits with lowering LDL.
Other medications like niacin are not that beneficial.
I know a lot of people have side effects with statins (my mother had muscle aches). Are there certain ones that are less likely to cause side effects?
Pravastatin is less likely to cause muscle and liver problem.
And low dosage, this is safe to use.
Great, thanks for your help
