for the last 8 days I have been feeling sick with a cold and it continues to get worse. My main symtoms are strong sore throat, a dry cough every few minutes, slight elevated fever around 99, and sometimes some chest congestion to cough out. I am feeling a bit more sick everyday and now I started calling in sick to work and I cant talk without coughing. I did go to a doctor several days ago and they said it was just a regular cold and told me to get rest, but even with rest and cough medicine and tylenol I cough just as much and feel just as sick. I was tested negative for strep throat. Any advice or help? Should I continue to stay home from work to help get over this?

Hi there,

I am Mysticdoc, experienced Internal Medicine Specialist.

I am here to help you with your concerns.

mysticdoc :

Do you have any phlegm at all?

Customer:

yes, usually a lot, sometimes none, mostly I have very strong sore throat and cough

mysticdoc :

Do you feel any swollen glands around the neck?

Customer:

no

mysticdoc :

any significant shortness of breath?

Customer:

no

mysticdoc :

ok

mysticdoc :

this can still be viral bronchitis.

mysticdoc :

The symptoms may persist sometimes longer.

mysticdoc :

Rest, fluids and tylenol will help.

Customer:

how long could this last?

mysticdoc :

And plenty of vitamin C like orange juice, lemonade etc.

mysticdoc :

Now a steroid inhaler can be tried to reduce the discomfort.

mysticdoc :

If these symptoms do not improve by next week, then another clinical evaluation is required.

mysticdoc :

Bacterial infection should be suspected if symptoms persist after 2 weeks,.

Customer:

ok

Customer:

also, this didn't pass to my wife, not very contageious

mysticdoc :

that is also reassuring.

Customer:

how long does bronchitis last?

Customer:

if I have it?

mysticdoc :

can be 2-3 weeks

Customer:

ok, thankyou

mysticdoc :

very welcome
