Hi have had some pitting edema on my shins on for about 2 months.

Resolved Question:

Hi have had some pitting edema on my shins on for about 2 months. My Dr had me in water pills but they don't seem to be working and make me feel sick to my stomach. I've had a Venus Doppler and don't have blot clots. I've also had blood work done and all were within normal range. I am having a CT scan this week on my abdomen and pelvis and then an appointment with a cardiologist the following week. I've noticed slight swelling in my hand has well between my index finger and thumb with no pitting or pain. My PCP seems to think it could be weight related. I'm not short of breath or coughing

My questions are as follows. Does swelling always mean an underlying medical condition? I am 35 and don't feel as I have the symptoms of congestive heart failure. I've had labs on my kidney functions and they were in range.

Hi there,

I am Mysticdoc, experienced Internal Medicine Specialist.

I am here to help you with your concerns.

mysticdoc :

How is your liver function?

mysticdoc :

Is your albumin level normal?

Customer: Fine as far as I know all labs normal
Customer: I've never hear of the alubim level
mysticdoc :

that is part of liver function.

mysticdoc :

and also any thyroid test done?

Customer: I can have it rechecked at my PCP just frustrated at this point I've been overweight most of my adult life and the edema is new
Customer: Thyroid normal been tested with my rhumatolisgt due to high ANA 1:32
mysticdoc :

ok

mysticdoc :

another possibility is autoimmune condition.

mysticdoc :

Vasculitis for example.

mysticdoc :

Also lupus can cause this as well.

mysticdoc :

And are you taking any steroid medication?

Customer: Was tested full panel for lupus, RA and hosimotos sorry for spelling all at the time were in range
mysticdoc :

ok

Customer: No steroids taking neurotion for Begin fascaltuon syndrome
mysticdoc :

ok

mysticdoc :

see neurontin can cause swelling as a side effect.

mysticdoc :

Not serious but to be aware of.

mysticdoc :

Does not sound like any serious underlying condition causing it.

Customer: Read that was having mild edema before been on the meds for 1 month just worried about my heart
mysticdoc :

The heart can be checked by your cardiologist --sounds unlikely though.

Customer: Would I know if I was having CHF?
mysticdoc :

Still, echocardiogram should be ordered.

mysticdoc :

yes you will.

mysticdoc :

shortness of breath and decreased physical capacity

Customer: Ok I will mention should I still take water pills seeing they have no effect?
mysticdoc :

No need.

mysticdoc :

but you can take in low dosage

Customer: No I climb my stairs all day and swim a few times a week
mysticdoc :

take potassium supplements also.

mysticdoc :

bananas, oranges

mysticdoc :

ok that is good

Customer: Ok the edema is very mild according to 3 diff docs and you have to press on it to even see it pops out within a min or two
mysticdoc :

That is not concerning.

mysticdoc :

Probably better to avoid water pills.

Customer: Forgot to mention was in er in may having panic attack thought it was something else. All labs normal as well as EKG
mysticdoc :

reassuring.

mysticdoc :

likely panic attack then

Customer: Less likely for heart then I hope
mysticdoc :

correct less likely

Customer: Would weight cause edema? I'm 260 lbs getting ready for bypass surgeyr
mysticdoc :

yes that can also cause this.

mysticdoc :

venous edema

mysticdoc :

means incompetent veins can also cause edema.

mysticdoc :

also estrogenic influence

Customer: Had a Doppler last week was told legs looked great
Customer: Ohhh
mysticdoc :

ok that is good.

mysticdoc :

subcutaneous edema is seen with obesity

Customer: I will await my ct scan and cardio appt thank you so muc
mysticdoc :

that should be fine.

mysticdoc :

very welcome

mysticdoc :

It was my pleasure to help you today.
