wife has history of diabetes, obesity, osteo, back and knee surgeries, morphine pump to spinal column(L2-3-4). Low oxygen 74-96 varies. Reading mentions mental impairment from low o2 levels(which I have noticed) 68 yr. age What type of treatment can raise o2 levels and is this a probable culprit? thanks.

Dr Brims :

I'm sorry to hear about this

Customer:

she has been in rehab hosp for 8 days -home one she can't stay awake and o2 level is 84 to 96 with 2.5 l of oxygen thru nose.

Dr Brims :

If her O2 levels are low, the problem is likely from her lungs or heart

Dr Brims :

Are you there?

Customer:

yes

Customer:

she has bronchial asthma and possible apnea but won't do sleep study

Dr Brims :

I see, the asthma may be a cause

Dr Brims :

She should have pulmonary function tests to determine the extent

Customer:

can this cause mental imparement --i notice but no one else does

Dr Brims :

Yes, it can cause mental impairment

Customer:

just what would be my best course of action- have a very co-operative family doctor who is pulling his hair too she don't always co-operate with treatments and has been on many medicines for 30 + years including pain meds

Dr Brims :

She should see a pulmonologist and have pulmonary function tests

Dr Brims :

She should also have a CT scan of her chest

Customer:

Dr Brims :

Customer:
