My son was diagnosed with uveitis in one eye. His vision was so blurry he couldn't see the big E at the top of the eye chart.

I hope that the cause is just herpes simplex. However I have read that this can also be a symptom of many other issues. What tests should be run to rule these out? Should he be tested for autoimmune diseases? Other tests?

Thanks.
Hello,
Causes of uveitis often can't be determined ,but some conditions like autoimmune diseases(rheumatoid arthritis)some infections like syphilis, toxoplasmosis and TB ,ocular histoplasmosis,CMV (ie cytomegalovirus)or candidal or herpetic infection ,local eye trauma, some diseases of intestines ie crohn's/ulcerative colitis may be linked to uveitis.
As you describe, following further investigations should be advised to rule out underlying possible cause of Uveitis in his case-
Rapid plasma reagin (RPR)for Syphilis
FTA-ABS (Fluorescein Treponemal Antibodies)
Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR)
Lysozyme
Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE)
HLA-B27 typing
Rheumatoid Factor (RF)
Anti-nuclear antibodies (ANA)
Lyme titers
Herpes PCR
Chest X-ray
Sacroiliac, lumbar or thoracic spine xrays
It's good to consult his Opthalmologist for further evaluation and management.

I hope this helps.
