I just discovered a black spot under a fingernail. I just happened

Resolved Question:

I just discovered a black spot under a fingernail. I just happened to look and it was there. My dad had melanoma and it was stage 4 when it was discovered. I am fair skinned, blue eyed and have already had basal cell skin cancer. I have had at least two severe sun burns in my life. How long should I wait and watch to see if it's just a small bruise before I assume it's worse & go to a doctor? If my PCP thinks it's melanoma, whom would I see first, an dermatologist or an oncologist?

Hi there,

I am Mysticdoc, experienced Internal Medicine Specialist.

I am here to help you with your concerns.

mysticdoc :

Given your strong family history of melanoma, and you being fair skinned, the risk of melanoma is increased in your case.

mysticdoc :

The features of suspicious mole will be growing size, irregular edges, change in color, bleeding.

mysticdoc :

But these features may not be present sometimes.

mysticdoc :

And melanoma can present under the fingernail as well.

mysticdoc :

You should consult with a dermatologist first for further evaluation soon.

Don't wait to see if it's "just" some kind of small bruise I don't remember getting?

I will no suggest not.
Small bruise under fingernail is possible but unlikely if you do not remember.
And a black spot should be check out instead of waiting.
