I am 48 and missed my period 2-3 weeks ago. I am now experiencing

Resolved Question:

I am 48 and missed my period 2-3 weeks ago. I am now experiencing pelvic pressure and feeling bloated. I am tired and retaining fluid or gaining weight for no apparent reason. While I am scheduled to see my GYN in 2 weeks, I wonder if this is just normal perimenopause/menopause or if this is something more serious. I feel pressure in the left lower quadrant. cyst? cancer? worried.

Hi,
Were your periods regular?
Any contraception?
Have you undergone pregnancy test?
Constipation?
Burning sensation and pain during urination?
Any other medical illness?
Are you taking any medicines?
Frequent urination?

Thanks dear.

Periods were regular, except for one missed period last january. Periods are regular, although shorter over the past 2-3 years i.e. every 25-28 days where they used to be 28-32 days when younger. Did at home pregnancy test and it was negative. No constipation. No burning sensation or any other symptoms. No medical illness although I was found to have an incidental ovarian cyst last February via ultrasound...told it was benign and not to worry by my GYN, who seemed bothered that my FP ordered it. FP ordered it after missed period and he said he thought my uterus felt somehow out of the ordinary and ordered the ultrasound and referral to GYN. I take no medications. I do not currently use contraception, but we abstain i.e. rhythm method...I know, but it's worked for 10 years. I've also been told fertility is virtually nil after 45. I have gained about 10-15 pounds over the past couple months, which could be contributing to my bloatedness. Thanks for any insight.

I feel as though I am about to get my period, but I am just so much more uncomfortable (bloated with pelvic pressure, but no pain) then usual. I have not had my period in 46 days.

From your history i would suggest that you should undergo a Thyroid function test.

TSH
Free T3
Free T4

This should rule out hypothyroidism as a potential cause of weight gain.

Regarding missed period apart from pregnancy there can be many causes like weight gain, perimenopause, hormonal imbalance, emotional disturbance, stress etc to name a few.

Normally during Perimenopause periods may become irregular and this is quite common. If you have a space of 60 days or more between periods, you're likely in late perimenopause.
