My left foot hurts in the heal when I wake up in the morning

This answer was rated:

My left foot hurts in the heal when I wake up in the morning and the front "pad" of my foot feels a bit numb. It gets a bit better about a half hour into the day, but still bothers me throughout the day.
When I eat domino's pizza, it flares up worse.

I am 6 foot tall and weight 280, so I estimate I am 80 lbs overweight and have sleep apnea. I have never had a sleep study - i am self diagnosed by having my wife witness what happens when I sleep. I got a doctor to write a prescription for a machine and I bought a cpap machine. I only seem to be able to wear the mask for 2-3 hours per night. When i wear it, my foot feels better.

I am trying to figure out if i have peripheral artery disease or if i am diabetic or possibly something else causing my foot problems. At first I thought that it was plantar fasciitis, but when I started seeing the pain "spreading" through my leg, I went back and researched and came up with PAD. I bought an oxygen machine, and using my cpap again and the condition noticeably improved.

Any thoughts?

Hi there,

I am Mysticdoc, experienced Internal Medicine Specialist.

I am here to help you with your concerns.

mysticdoc :

Do you see any worsening of the pain on walking?

mysticdoc :

Also do you get symptoms in both feet?

mysticdoc :

Peripheral arterial disease is a possibility if your symptom worsen with walking.

mysticdoc :

Also improvement with CPAP machine suggests reduced blood flow to the feet.

mysticdoc :

Hence, ABI index ( ankle brachial index), a screening test for PAD should be considered.

mysticdoc :

Diabetes also can affect the peripheral nerves

mysticdoc :

Being overweight does increase the risk of diabetes.

mysticdoc :

This should be ruled out as well.

mysticdoc :

If these conditions are ruled out, then this is likely plantar fasciitis.

mysticdoc :

Modified shoes, foot exercises, losing weight will help in that case.

mysticdoc :

Best wishes,

yes, more on my left than on my right

I have purchased a test kit called AccuCheck at walgreens for diabetes.

Customer:

I am gathering that my next steps should be to get tested for diabetes using the accu-check and then get an Ankle-brachial index (ABI) test for PAD.

mysticdoc :

Yes I agree.

mysticdoc :

I think PAD is a distinct possibility.
