Hello,
Thanks for providing more information.
As you describe it seems that Lumbar radiculopathy can be a possibility.
It can be caused by the compression of lumbar nerves L4 or L5 or sacral nerves due to spinal disc herniation.

He needs to undergo MRI of Lumbosacral spine for further evaluation.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen and Physical therapy like deep heat ,traction ,interferential therapy can be effective in his case.

I suggest you to consult an Orthopedist for further evaluation and management.
And as he has severe pain so it's good to make an appointment in next few days rather than consider wait & watch approach.

I hope this helps.
If you have any further query then feel free to ask.
Positive feedback and bonus are highly appreciated.
Thank you.

Hello,
Thanks for the follow-up.
Electronic massager, heating pad can give temporary relief from lower back pain.
It's also good to see a chiropractor for massage therapy.
Physical therapy can be effective in his case.

There are various brands of electronic massager and you can try anyone.
