Can being on warfarin cause a false-negative on a d-dimer?
Hi--why was the d dimer test run and why are you on the warfarin?
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

On warfarin for a DVT that occured Oct 2012 spontaneously (later found to have factor V Leiden).

New chest pain over weekend, d-dimer to rule out PE after some ECG results suggested it may be possible.

Still have chest pain, now - current plan is to take Ativan for anxiety and tylenol in case it's muscular pain, but not getting much relief from either.

Will be following up with my cardiologist re ECG changes on Thursday.

Did you have a lung V/Q scan or a ct scan?
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

No, based on the d-dimer they decided no further testing was needed.

Well, it is possible for one to have a false negative d dimer test when looking for a pulmonary embolus so I would proceed with the further diagnostic tests--a V?Q scan and the chest ct. It isn't common for a patient on appropriate anticoagulation to get a PE but it still can happen
