What test, and how effective is a test on ones liver to see if you have alcohol problem?
Hello,
Blood tests like Liver function test,Serum Amylase,Lipase,CBC,ESR,Renal function test,Fasting Lipid panel should be advised.
Further Ultrasound/CT scan whole abdomen should be done to assess liver damage.
In some cases a liver biopsy is performed.

I hope this helps.

yes. can they get a very accurate indication of how much a person drinks alcohol with those tests?

Hello,
Liver function test usually detects the abnormality in liver functioning caused due to alcohol.
The recommended daily alcohol intake is 1-2 units/day (14–28g/day), not to exceed 14 units/week (196g/week).
So excess amount of alcohol can interfere with liver functioning.
Even long term use of alcohol can also alter liver function.
If you want to detect the exact amount of alcohol person drinks so blood alcohol test can be advised.

I hope this helps.

If one has not had an alcoholic drink in 30 days, will a test on the liver still show anything?

Hello,
Well most likely it would not effect liver functioning.
As if a person completely abstain alcohol for 3-4 weeks then liver damage due to alcohol get reversible.

I hope this helps.

If a person has not had alcohol for 30 days and they want him to get tested. to see if he has alcohol tolerance.

Will his liver say he has tolerance, or will his liver say he has not had alcohol?

Hello,
If a person has not taken alcohol for 30 days then his liver function test suggest alcohol hasn't affect the functioning.
Generally, alcohol can leave trace amounts producing positive results from 3 hours to 18 hours after consumption as it takes on an average one hour to process one unit of alcohol.
Tolerance means that after continued drinking, consumption of a constant amount of alcohol produces a lesser effect or increasing amounts of alcohol are necessary to produce the same effect.
So alcohol tolerance is not determined by liver function test.
However if a person take excessive amount of alcohol,it can gradually affect liver and cause liver damage.

I hope this helps.

Well,

Apparently there is a test of the liver or liver fluids which reveals if someone is an alcoholic or dependent or tolerant.

I'm wondering how these tests would result if a person has been a heavy drinker for years but then doesn't drink for 30 days before the test?

Hello,
The CDT (Carbohydrate Deficient Transferrin) test detects heavy alcohol abuse - more than 5 drinks per day.
It can show heavy chronic alcohol abuse up to 2 to 4 weeks after stopping.

Hair test can also detect alcohol abuse.
GGT (one of liver function test)also elevates in chronic heavy alcohol drinker and it will take longer for the GGT to return to normal.

I hope this helps.

Hello,
It may takes 4-8 weeks depending on amount, duration of alcohol consumption after completely abstaining.

Customer: replied 3 years ago.

Yes, so great !

Considering what you said above,

How much would It help?

and how many days would it take doing that to help?

For example if would take six weeks without the above, how much would that be reduced WITH the above? Roughly

Hello,
It would help in reversing liver damage within 4 weeks(approximately).
And it's advised strongly to avoid alcohol completely.

I hope this helps.
