What could the cause be? What can be done now? more tests?
As you describe possible causes may include Gastroenteritis.
And usually most of the infection subside in few days to weeks.
Now as per their current condition, they need to continue BRAT diet((bananas, rice, applesauce and toast)for few more days.
Also continue to hydrate themselves with oral rehydration solution.
Start probiotics and metamucil.
Even Gretchen should take OTC Mylanta.
If their symptoms'll not improve in next few days then a clinical examination by a gastroenterologist should be considered.
Further colonoscopy should be advised to rule out Colitis,Irritable bowel syndrome.

I hope this helps.
