This answer was rated:

For the past 4-6 months, I've gotten random shooting pain on the right side of my neck. Sometimes it radiates up into my head, sometimes not. When it IS occurring, though, it hurts pretty badly. It fluctuates between a pressure/stabbing/throbbing pain. It is only on my right side. What is it?

Dr. Saha :

Hello,

Dr. Saha :

Thank you for your question,

Dr. Saha :

I’m Dr. Saha and I’ll try to help you.

Dr. Saha :

How frequently do you get the pain?

Customer: A couple of times a week, usually.
Dr. Saha :

How long does it last?

Customer: Depends.... Half an hour or so. At least that.
Dr. Saha :

Do you feel any other symptom with it?

Customer: Eye pain sometimes, sometimes a headache does come with it, but most usually after it.
Dr. Saha :

In exactly which part of right side of neck?

Customer: Almost in the middle is where it originates.
Dr. Saha :

Does advil help?

Customer: No
Dr. Saha :

There can be a few possibilities.

Dr. Saha :

Muscle spasm can cause it.

Dr. Saha :

An impingement of nerve can cause pain here.

Dr. Saha :

This can occur in the spine.

Dr. Saha :

That pain can radiate.

Dr. Saha :

Sometimes rise of blood pressure, a brain or vascular issue can be there.

Dr. Saha :

As it is continuing for months I would suggest to get an examination by doctor.

Customer: Oh boy.
Dr. Saha :

A few tests like X ray & scan be taken.

Customer: Is this an appointment problem or an emergent problem?
Dr. Saha :

Doctor can then decide about the treatment.

Dr. Saha :

You can seek an appointment.

Dr. Saha :

If you develop any other sympXXXXX XXXXXke vomiting, rigidity of neck or visual disturbances along with pain, then you need to take an examination in ER.

Customer: Rigidity? Like not being able to turn it?
Dr. Saha :

Like you can not touch the chest with your chin by bending the neck.

Dr. Saha :

My goal is to provide you with excellent service.

If there’s anything else I can do, please let me know
Customer: ive even taken norco when it happens and that didn't even help.
Dr. Saha :

That is why you need to take an evaluation & tests.

Customer: i may have to make it emergent to get testing quicker. I leave next week until August and will be unable to wait that long...
Dr. Saha :

Then you need to take an urgent consultation before leaving.

Dr. Saha :

You should not wait till August.

Customer: Ok. Like right now it's just debilitating. It hurts bad.
Dr. Saha :

When did you take advil?

Customer: I haven't because it doesn't help.
Dr. Saha :

You can try tylenol. You can also apply heat with warm towel.

Customer: okay....ill try it
Customer: thanks
Dr. Saha :
It’s been a pleasure working with you

You are always welcome.
Dr. Saha :

If you are satisfied, please leave an excellent rating.

Dr. Saha :

Best wishes.
