If a prescription calls for erythromycin 400mg/5ml, dispense

This answer was rated:

If a prescription calls for erythromycin 400mg/5ml, dispense 100ml. The dose is 40mg/kg/day and the child weighs 44 pounds. The sig. reads_____tsp qid until gone. What would the tsp dose be? How many days will the prescription lasts?

How do you solve this in detail and what would the tsp dose be and how many days will the prescription last?

Hello,

Thank you for your question, I’m Dr. Saha and I’ll try to help you.

1 kg = 2.2 lbs. So 44 lbs = 44/ 2.2 = 20 kg.

The child is 44 pounds or 20 kg.

If he gets 40 mg /kg/day, then he will get 40 x 20 =800 mg per day.

Each 5 ml or 1 tsp contains 400 mg.

So he will need 800 mg / 400 mg = 10 ml or 2 tsp per day.

1/2 tsp or 2.5 ml qid or 4 times a day.

If 5 ml or 1 tsp contains 400 mg, then 100 ml will contain 100/5 = 20 tsp.

So the bottle will finish in 20 tsp /2 tsp = 10 days.

I hope this information helps.

Best wishes.
