I work on a farm and just discovered a few minutes ago that some time during the day I cut an inch long gash in my leg, fairly deep. I think I remember hitting my leg on something but I think the damage was done through my sweatpants, as I don't have a tear in them (so I'm thinking it didn't really get dirty). It seems clean and didn't appear to bleed much. I really don't have time to get a tetanus don't want to if not necessary. I have not had one in probably 15-20 years...I am 45. Do you think this warrants a tetanus shot? If yes, how long do I have to get one before it will be ineffective?
Hasn't tetanus in the US mostly been eradicated?

Thank you for your question,

I’m Dr. Saha and I’ll try to help you.

Booster shots are usually advised every 10 years.

Taking it more frequently is not harmful.

In case of contaminated or puncture wound, it is better to take booster after 5 years.

Though your wound does not seem to be contaminated, I would advise to have tetanus shot as you did not have it in last 15 years.

It is helpful to take it early.

It depends on the nature of the wound & the vaccination status.

It is better to take it within 24 hours after the injury.

I hope this information helps.

I will be happy to assist, if you need any clarification.
