Irregular periods are commonly caused by the hormonal imbalance.

Irregular periods can be caused by the other causes also.
THyroid gland disorder
This can be checked by the serum TSH level.
Uterine fibroid tumors are another possibility.
Endometrial thickening can cause this as well.
These two possibilities can be checked by the pelvic ultrasound.
Bleeding disorder is another possibility that is checked with certain blood tests to measure the coagulation parameters.
Most commonly, this is hormonal imbalance related.
Estrogen and progesterone are required in right balance for regular periods.
Hence, birth control pills with different preparations ( lower estrogen content) can be considered to minimize the discomfort.
IUDs are another option as well.
Endometrial hyperplasia if present is can be treated with ablation procedure.
