I have purples shadows around my eyes. What can I do about it and what other than age causes it. I am 71.
Hello,
Welcome to justanswer.com and thank you for your question.
I am going to assist you with your question. First I need a little more information-

Do you see dark circles or bags around eyes?
Are you suffering from any medical condition or on any medication ?
Do you suffer from severe emotional stress?
Does your siblings or parents have them?

Kind Regards,
Dr. Robert

Just dark circles. I had plastic surgery on eyes 8 years ago;

Just quit taking effexor xr, was taking hydrocodone on and off for arthritis. Now take tramodol, 50mg 3 times a day.

Don't recall about my parents
Dear Customer, Thanks for providing quick additional information.

With increasing age, the thin, tough membrane called orbital septum,
(which surrounds eye) which keeps the normal fat pad in place behind your eye becomes weak and tears.
It results in swelling, or bags or dark purple shadows under eyes. This is normal with increasing age.

Other than old age, common reasons are-
1. Lifestyle factors, such as physical or emotional stress, smoking.
2. Pigmentation irregularities
3. Sun exposure
4. Rubbing or scratching of eyes
5. Hereditary factors

The only authentic way to treat this problem is with surgery, called a blepharoplasty.
To treat this condition, you can try these measures-

1. You should take a diet of mostly fruits and vegetables and non-processed whole grains.
2. You should drink lots of water (as much as eight glasses a day), and limit alcohol, tea, coffee, and caffeinated soft drinks.
3. You should apply cold pads or compresses, sleeping atleast 8 hours a day.
4. You can consult a doctor who will be able to prescribe a stronger topical product to reduce the dark discoloration.
I would suggest that you can consult Dermatologist for best treatment options.

Would you please describe blepharoplasty surgery and what can I expect from it
Dear Customer, Thanks for asking follow up question.

This surgery, removes excess skin, muscle and fat from above and below your eyelids.
Blepharoplasty is usually done on an outpatient basis.
Also Scars from the incisions may take up to six months to fade.
This would remove all purple and dark shadows around eyes.
Please see your doctor and discuss about this option.
