This can be trigger finger (trigger thumb), or tendonitis (tenosynovitis0Trigger thumb and tendonitis are painful conditions that cause the thumb to catch or lock in a bent position.
The problems often originates because of inflammation of tendons located within a protective covering called the tendon sheath.
You can take OTC Motrin 200 mg every 4-6 hourly.
Also try thumb splint to keep it straight.
If your pain is severe then consult your regular doctor or Orthopedist for further evaluation and management.
