My sister has advanced alzheimers. She is 65 years old.

Resolved Question:

My sister has advanced alzheimers. She is 65 years old. She has been hospitalized several times for UTI. Her symptoms are seizure like in nature. In past " seizures" she has had what is described as "frothing at the mouth". In June, she had what was described as a seizure during which she broke both of her arms and dislocated both of her shoulders. Can UTI cause such such symptoms and such severe reactions?? And if this is so how do you treat it?>

mysticdoc :

Hello,

mysticdoc :

Thanks for your question.

mysticdoc :

Have you discussed these episodes with her neurologist?

Customer:

No

mysticdoc :

ok

mysticdoc :

these reactions can indeed be genuine seizures not uncommon in this condition.

mysticdoc :

EEG should be done.

mysticdoc :

And an anti epileptic medication should be considered given the frequent episodes.

mysticdoc :

To prevent recurrent UTIs, a prophylactic antibiotic can be used daily.

mysticdoc :

Nitrofurantoin can be used for this purpose.

mysticdoc :

Due to the poor communication issues from advanced disease and with aging, the symptoms of UTi can manifest as neurological symptoms.

Customer:

What is the treatment for frequent UTI in a woman who wears diapers? I know that the diapers can aggravate the condition but what is the day to day treatment for a woman living in a n alzheimers facility? How bad does the UTI get before the UTI symptoms are apparent in an alzheimers patient?

mysticdoc :

Nitrofurantoin can be used daily.

mysticdoc :

As I explained above, UTI symptoms even the mild, can manifest as neurological symptoms inb elderly

mysticdoc :

the presentation is different than in young individuals.

Customer:

Does cranberry juice or other similar juice help in preventing UTI?

mysticdoc :

yes this may help also .

mysticdoc :

cranberry capsules also available.

Customer:

You said the name of the medicine she could take on an ongoing basis to prevent UTI. Please say it again.

mysticdoc :

Nitrofurantoin

Customer:

My sister has had 5 hospitalizations in the past year which turned out to be in the main diagnosed UTI, but has required multiple days to a week of hospitalizations...we would like to get a handle on the problem.

mysticdoc :

yes that is common problem with advanced alzheimer's

mysticdoc :

I believe nitrofurantoin daily will help a lot to reduce the frequency of UTIs.

Customer:

Thanks, XXXXX XXXXX it
