Hi...i have been having 1 tonsil (right) bigger than the other

Customer Question

Hi...i have been having 1 tonsil (right) bigger than the other off & on since about April. Only once there was a few white spots. Today there is no spots just one bigger than thr other. Could it be a serious condition like cancer? Or just maybe an infection of something.

Any pain associated with this? Just white spots or are there any ulcers--craters--in the tonsil?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.

No no pain. I could notice something but it was not painful at all.

Only a few white spots previously. Today on the right side it looks like I have 2 smalls tonsils. Not really a crater, no ulcers.

Expert:  Dr. Chip replied 1 year ago.
OK--so these are basically flat smooth white spots?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.

Pretty much. They are not there now but they were previously. As I indicated today the right side is just swollen. Not red or painful or anything. Just swollen. No white spots yet...

I did take a few left over antibotics I had & it seems to go away but will come back eventually.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.

Actually I take that back I looked closer & there are a few white spots. very tiny & small.

Expert:  Dr. Chip replied 1 year ago.
OK--sounds like you probably have what's called tonsilloliths--tonsil stones. They're trapped food debris in the crypts of the tonsil and sometimes they occur after tonsilitis. Nothing serious here like cancer, and often they do just fall out. If one of them gets to be a bother by getting too large, it would need to be excised surgically
Customer: replied 1 year ago.

hmph...ok it there anything I can do to prevent it from happening again besides surgery?

Expert:  Dr. Chip replied 1 year ago.
Good dental hygiene--flossing and brushing after every meal and twice daily mouthwash gargle.
