Customer Question

Long story short...last month I went to the dr, and finally realized I was experiencing tension headaches, in addition to some seasonal allergies where I take zyrtec and flonase on a regular basis. When I saw my dr about 3 weeks ago or so...she gave me a script for bactrim just in case I didn't feel better over the weekend (being that I was going away)... I didn't have to start it...I took fioricet and it helps a lot.
Yesterday, I noticed some nose pressure and a little bit of head pressure...today and yesterday I took fioricet and now doesn't seem to help, I'm thinking maybe possible sinus infection maybe. Would it be wise to start the bactrim or make an appointment with the dr first?

Dr Brims :

Hello, welcome to Justanswer, I will try to assist you with your medical question, and any medical information you seek

Dr Brims :

Do you have any fevers or chills or nasal/ sinus pain?

Customer :

no fever or chills...the pain is near the bridge of my nose mainly, and I little bit of head pressure....

Dr Brims :

Any post nasal drip?

Customer :

I've been dealing with this sort of pain for months...went through extensive treatments and whatnot to determine what it's from. CT of sinus show clear...

Customer :

a little post nasal drip I guess...i feel like there is a lump when i swallow sometimes...is that nasal drip?

Customer :

i thought maybe i was getting a sore throat but nothing yet.

Dr Brims :

post nasal drip is mucus in the back of your throat that is worse in the mornings

Customer :

yes...i have to clear my throat some times. I also take prevacid for reflux.

Dr Brims :

I don't really think you have a sinus infection, but if you have already been given the antibiotics, you may try them to see if they help

Customer :

she gave me the script just in case but i did start feeling better by taking the fioricet, now it doesn't seem to help, possibly it's something else, but at this point, im lost for words as to what it is...

Customer :

ive been to an allergist, long story, he gave me the good meds and didn't help...the only thing that helped was the fioricet and it doesnt seem to be helping this time, possibly not really tension this time. hmmm

Dr Brims :

I see, well it is reasonable to try the antibiotics, and if they don't improve your symptoms you may require an evaluation by a neurologist

Customer :

i saw a neurologist who says they aren't migraines and he doesnt believe them to be tension (even though the medicine worked wonders)...

Dr Brims :

Okay, then you may need an MRI

Dr Brims :

Are you there?

Customer :

yes.

Customer :

Maybe try antibiotics first and then go from there? Or see my regular dr first...ugh I'm so confused...lol I have the ok for the mri but since I started feeling 100% better, I have put it off being that I felt good.

Dr Brims :

Yes, you may try the antibiotics first and go from there

Customer :

sorry to be a pain...you agree that I should try the antibiotics given my history..see how I feel then go to dr if needed, or see my regular dr first...

Dr Brims :

I think you should try the antibiotics first, and see your doctor after if there is no improvement

Customer :

thank you!

Customer :

generally, how long should it take for bactrim to start working or for me to feel better?

Dr Brims :

You're quite welcome, it should take about 2-3 days at the most
