Customer Question

I have been experiencing a sharp, stabbing pain in my right, upper calf about 2 or 3 inches or so below the knee. The pain is intense (about a 7 on a scale of 1 to 10) and lasts for about 3 to 6 seconds. Accompanying this pain is a pins and needles sensation in my right thigh. Sometimes during the pins and needles my thigh will also feel slightly cold or hot. Lately the stabbing pain and pins and needles sensation have not been as intense. I should also note that during times of stress, the pins and needles sensation will occur.

Hi,
Do you have lower back pain?
Swelling,redness on affected area?
Duration of symptoms?

Thanks.

Customer replied 318 days and 1 hours ago.

Interestingly, I began to have lower back pain about a week or so ago- mainly at night while trying to sleep.

I don't know if this is related but I have also been experiencing arch pain in my right foot; itcomes and goes but mainly after working all day on my feet.

I have not noticed swelling or redness on the affected area. I had my girlfriend double-check for me and she did not notice any either.

Regarding the duration of symptoms: I first experienced the sharp calf pain several months ago. It came and went intermittently for a few weeks then disappeared for about 3 months. Then the sharp calf pain returned about a month ago- this time accompanied by the pins and needles sensation in my thigh.

The sharp calf pain lasts for less than 10 seconds but the pins and needles sometimes last up to 20 minutes during the day. One night I had the pins and needles with the hot and or cold sensation for several hours.

My lower back began to ache a week or so ago and usually lasts during the night.

My arch pain comes and goes- like I mention above it is usually more pronounced after a long day of working on my feet. Note: I produce videos so after shooting days the pain is worse. During editing days I am seated and the arch pain diminishes.

Hi,
Thanks for more information.
As per your description(lower back pain, pain and pin &needles in leg)your symptoms suggest nerve impingement(Lumbar radiculopathy).
It can be caused due to compression of nerves at Lumbosacral spine so you need to undergo X-ray/MRI and a clinical examination by an Orthopedist.
You can take OTC Motrin.
Go for physical therapy which'll be effective in your case.
Prolonged hours of standing can result in pain in arch so take short breaks of rest while doing work.
You shouldn't ignore your symptoms as repetitive strain can result in worsening of pain and other symptoms.
Wear good shoes and your doctor may advise Orthotics/Cushion pads which help in relieving arch pain.
You can do gentle massage with muscle relaxant ointment on lower back.
Apply warm compresses with a heating pad.

Hope this helps.
Feel free to ask for further query.
Thanks.

Thank you so much for the info.... one more question if that is alright.... based on my descriptions and your answers does that mean I don't need to worry about this being a blood clot or deep vein thrombosis?

Hi,
Pin and needles sensation is usually associated with nerve compression.
As you have no associated swelling, redness, skin discoloration so chances of having deep vein thrombosis are less.
Also as you have lower back pain so most likely the causative root of your symptoms lies in lumbosacral spine.
So do self care measures and make an appointment with an Orthopedist for further evaluation and management.

Hope this helps.
