Lupus is an autoimmune disease. This means that the body immune system attacks its own tissues and organs.
As a result, lupus causes chronic inflammation of many different areas of the body, including the kidneys, joints, skin, nervous system, lungs, heart and eyes. Not all of these areas are affected in each person.

The cause of lupus is not known, unfortunately.

Each person with lupus may have a unique set of symptoms. Common symptoms include joint pains, rash (especially across the nose and cheeks when in the sun), fatigue, headaches, fevers...

We do not have a cure for lupus at this time. However, we do have many drugs that can be prescribed to help control the disease. For example, steroids are used to help control inflammation.
Immunosuppressant drugs are also prescribed. This is because the disease is a disease of the immune system suppressing the immune system, we help to suppress the disease activity.

The diagnosis of lupus is made based on symptoms/physical exam and blood work.
