I recently started rock climbing and the other day noticed a small reddish bump where my leg meets my groin. There is a small amount of irritation in the area of the harness and the bump is a little itchy. Mostly it is ugly, but it doesn't look like a blister like I get on my feet from running. Should I be concerned? Will it go away if I lay off climbing for a while?

Hi, welcome to justanswer , there are many possibilities in your case. This red itchy bump could be product of local irritation , an infectious process ( viral , bacterial ,fungal or parasite infection ) , an allergic process , scabies( a parasite skin infection that burrows under the skin), folliculitis ( this is an infection of the hair follicles ,it is usually caused by a Staphylococcus bacterial infection), a bug ,insect or flea bite. What I would recommend you would be to consult a doctor immediately ( go to the emergency ) if you experience additional symptoms like purulent secretion, the lesion becomes painful , you experience swelling or other symptoms like fever , chills ,joint pain , body aches or generalized fatigue .What you could try in the meantime is applying warm compresses, you could get an over the counter hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion to decrease the itchy sensation and apply an over the counter topical antibiotic cream like neosporin ( it contains neomycin ,polymyxin and bacitracin ) to the area . If your symptoms do not improve within a period of 5-7 days , you will need to consult a doctor for a further medical evaluation and to receive a more specific treatment .If you sustained any type of injury while you were rock climbing ,you should go to the doctor to see if you will need to receive a tetanus shot .If you like the answer, please click accept so I can get credit for my work.I do not get credit for my work unless you click the green accept button .If you have any additional questions or any doubts you wanna ask me , I will be here to help you.
