my son is from sunny so california and went to college in seattle WA. in the winter/spring

Resolved Question:

my son is from sunny so california and went to college in seattle WA. in the winter/spring its gloomy and rainy constantly. he's getting depressed and tired, sleeps like 11-12 hours. He's taking vitamin d daily but should i look into a uv lamp? If so can you recommend one or brand to purchase for his dorm room and should he use only in the morning? Of course, his diet isn't that great, but he does exercise 4-5 times a week, cardio and weight training or any other recommendations to relieve those symptons?

Dr. David :

Hello, I would like to help you with your questions about a UV lamp and other recommendations for your son living in cloudy Seattle. I start my Seattle patients on a dose of 5000 IU vitamin D3 per day. Then I ask them to get a vitamin D3 blood test after a few months at this dose to confirm that they are getting enough. Do you know how much vitamin D your son is taking? A multivitamin is also an excellent idea. Here is a link to the type of multivitamin that can be used therapeutically: http://www.iherb.com/Thorne-Research-Basic-Nutrients-V-180-Veggie-Caps/18123 I have a recommendation for a sun lamp, or tanning bed. Here is the link: http://tanningbeds.mercola.com/ I trust Dr. Mercola and his products. If I was going to get a sun lamp for myself, I would get one of these on his web page. Dr. David
