My 72 year old father suddenly thinks they have no money in the bank and can't pay their bills which is not the case. What could cause this?

This could be a sign of dementia/delirium. He should see his doctor/neurologist for blood work: CBC, CMP, TSH, Vitamin B12, RPR, etc as well as a CT of his head and a good neurological/psych exam.
