I have periodic bouts of severe pain in my upper right abdomen

Resolved Question:

I have periodic bouts of severe pain in my upper right abdomen sometimes triggered by small amounts of alcohol (I seldom drink) and the codeine I take for back pain, but mostly no obvious trigger. I may also have nausea and hives. During these episodes my AST & ALT will be the low to mid 100's and will return to normal in about one month. I tested positive, though weakly, for autoimmune hepatitus. My doctor does not think I have this because my last bloodwork was normal, but she doesn't know what would cause a false positive. She does not want to order a liver biopsy. What gives?

Drink no alcohol, ever.
You need to see an internist or GI specilaist.
This can still be autoimmune hepatitis, and you should have an anti-smooth muscle antibody test.

Hep, B, C, and hemachromatosis need to be ruled out.

Liver biopsy might not be necessary if a full work up is done.
good luck
