My chest hurts when I cough. How do I get rid of the pain?

Resolved Question:

My chest hurts really bad when I cough. I went to the doctor and have an upper respiratory infection and I have been coughing a ton. The coughing is mucus productive and I have almost choked on it. My issue is that my chest and neck hurt really bad when I cough and I am out of breath. I do not have asthma (have been tested prior to this sickness) and the Dr did not hear wheezing the other day. What can I do to reduce the pain (over the counter) or from home?

Dr Brims :

Hello, welcome to Justanswer.

What have you used for the pain and what medication are you on now?

JACUSTOMER-6hmb9jxt- :

My Dr put me on biaxin and sudafed for the respiratory infection.

Dr Brims :

I see, do you have any medical conditions?

JACUSTOMER-6hmb9jxt- :

Nope. Pretty healthy person!

Dr Brims :

Good

Have you tried ibuprofen?

JACUSTOMER-6hmb9jxt- :

No I haven't

Dr Brims :

Have you tried mucinex?

JACUSTOMER-6hmb9jxt- :

Yes, it didn't work.

I tried it for two days then went to the Dr.

I just feel like my chest and neck are really tight when I am having a coughing attack and usually end up really out of breath, but I am still getting air.

Dr Brims :

Okay, you may consider adding mucinex to your regimen to thin the mucus, it should help now that you are on antibiotics
Also, you may consider trying ibuprofen for the pain, about 400 mg every 8 hours should help

JACUSTOMER-6hmb9jxt- :

Ok. Thank you

Dr Brims :

You are welcome
