Why did you have the CEA level drawn?
Do you have any chronic health problems?
Do you smoke?

Thank you for clarifying,

I am sorry that you have been diagnosed with cancer. I know it is difficult to hear.

The CEA blood test is what is called a tumor marker blood test. The CEA level can be high in many conditions (some non-cancerous) but is also elevated in people who have colorectal cancer. Your level is high because of your cancer.
The level is used to help with preoperative staging, surgical treatment planning and prognosis.

We also use the CEA level to follow after treatment--if the level declines and then goes back up this can be indicative of recurrence or spread to other organs.

I hope that you feel well and that all goes well with your treatment,

Please feel free to ask any follow up questions you may have,

Dr Abby
