Hello,

Yes, chronic alcohol abuse can cause foot drop. People who drink alcohol for long periods of time are more susceptible to nerve compression. Foot drop is often due to compression of a nerve called the peroneal nerve, which is located close to the surface on the outside of the knee area.

if this person stops drinking, will this situation be temporary?
Possibly, yes.

He/she should be taking thiamine supplementation along with improving his/her nutrition.
An EMG test may need to be done to determine the underlying cause and to see whether there is an underlying alcoholic neuropathy going on as well.
Alcoholic neuropathy (numbness, burning, pain in the legs) can be very difficult to treat.

Physical therapy can be helpful for some people along with splinting of the foot.

Hopefully his/her case will reverse.
