Can patients under sedation in icu hear you when you talk to them?

This depends on the level of sedation.
Patients under 'lighter' sedation can hear you talking.
They may respond by flickering their eye lids or pressing on the hand.
he looks like hes dreaming, and seems to calm down when agitated if i speak to him and stroke his head. it is very scary to see though, and it would be reassuring if there was a way to know if he could hear me.
Yes, this is likely he can hear you and even understand you by his response.
