Will an mri of the knee show approximately when an injury occured

Resolved Question:

Will an mri of the knee show approximately when an injury occured such as an acl tear (weeks, months or years)?

Hello and thank you for your question,

MRI can differentiate between an old and a new injury but it will not show a proximity at which it occurred (what I mean is it can say "old injury" but will not specify the exact time). "Old injury" can be months to years depending on individuals' healing time.

If injury occured in the past 1-2 months will they be able to tell it did not just happen?

Expert:  Julia Kizhner replied 5 years ago.

If the injury occured in the past 1-2 months, it would be considered a new injury and it should show up as such.

If the injury is old, MRI will show scar tissue which has formed.

Hope this clarifies. Let me know if you have any other questions.
