How long are you having the symptoms?

Is there any swelling under the tongue?

How large is the neck gland?

Is there any pain?tenderness?

Is it soft or hard?

Do you have any other symptom or previous illness?

Thank you.

The sharp pain happened about 7 hrs ago and then nothing else happened. About an hour ago, the left gland only, started swelling. The swelling is visible and noticible when looking at me.

I do have tenderness and the area is soft. i don't have any other symptoms. When i swallow i can feel the pressure on my left side.

Thank you

Thank you for the information,

There are a few possibilities here.

This can be an enlarged lymph gland from an infection.

Another possibility is the salivary gland swelling.

There can be a stone in the salivary duct causing the sharp pain & obstruction.

This can cause swelling of the salivary gland.

You need to consult your doctor for evaluation and management.

Please feel free for any follow up query.

Best wishes.

Just one last question....Since it's 11pm where I am and I cant see my Dr. until tomorrow, would it help to take Benedryl for the swelling or something else? I don't have ANY other symptoms and the swelling happened in a matter of 30 minutes, very strange. No fever, but swelling is significant.

Thank you

If there is pain you can take antiinflammatory analgesics like motrin, if there is no contraindication.

You can also apply warm moist compress over it.
