Hello, I would like to ask a question, please. For many

Resolved Question:

Hello,

I would like to ask a question, please. For many many year since I was a kid I have been straining a lot on the toilet. Just until recently I found out that one can get hemorrhoids from this. I now try to eat more fiber to avoid this straining but it's not working wonders. What could improve this? I try eating mixed wheat bran with yogurt but it doesn't work really...
I would also like to ask whether there is still a chance to avoid getting hemorrhoids if I stop straining now even after so many years of straining. It's not a 100% rule that you must get them after many years of straining, or is it?

Thank you very much!

Dr. Shah :

Hello, Welcome to Just answer!

Dr. Shah :

Are you there?

Customer :

Hello, yes

Dr. Shah :

hi

Dr. Shah :

do you have any hemorrhoids symptoms now?

Customer :

Would you like to ask any additional questions?

Customer :

no I never had them

Dr. Shah :

any discomfort, itching, bulging, blood

Customer :

just asking about getting them

Dr. Shah :

Any other health issues?

Customer :

No health issues just constipation

Dr. Shah :

How often you do straining?

Customer :

therefore the straining

Dr. Shah :

or get constipation

Customer :

well

Customer :

most of the time really

Customer :

before

Customer :

I didn't eat much fruit

Customer :

or vegetables

Customer :

but

Customer :

I now try to change my diet

Dr. Shah :

Straining and constipation are a risk factor for hemorrhoids.

Dr. Shah :

Good news is that you don't have hemorroids

Dr. Shah :

having risk factor does not mean that you will get it 100%

Customer :

But is there a chance to still avoid them after so many years of straining? I don't have them now and I never had them.

Customer :

i understand

Dr. Shah :

but it does increase your risk as compared to other normal people.

Customer :

so I can still avoid getting them, right?

Dr. Shah :

yes, if you take care of constipation, modify your diet, then it will help you

Customer :

and could you please give me some advice. I stated in my question that I try to eat wheat bran (fruit and salads as well now) but there is still no change

Customer :

It's been a few months and no change. I mean it was a long period of not eating healthy, therefore I guess more time is needed, or not?

Dr. Shah :

You need to increase, fruit, vegetables, fibers along with water and exercise. If you don't see much improvement, then you can buy fiber supplements OTC which are very helpful.

Dr. Shah :

I will also suggest you to have some investigation to find out the cause of constipation. Your primary doctor can assist you in this matter

Customer :

ok, and wheat bran is alright together with yogurt for example?

Dr. Shah :

well anything that increases your fiber content is good. here is the link that will explain what to eat....

Dr. Shah :

Dr. Shah :

Bran is a good source of fiber

Customer :

OK thank you Dr. Shah, one last question I would like to ask - how many moths after not seeing any change with a healthy diet should I go to my doctor and undergo a colonoscopy? I had a gastroscopy done but it was ok.

Dr. Shah :

I am very positive, if you change your diet, increase water and exercise, it will help you. Additionally you can buy fiber supplements OTC. If you don't see any difference after 3-4 weeks, then I would suggest you to visit your doctor for proper evaluation for constipation.

Dr. Shah :

This can be done by your primary care doctor or a gastroenterologist.

Customer :

OK thank you! Have a nice day Dr.
