Customer Question

I am 34 and I found a red string or straw in my stool. I have had blood before but I have never seen this. What could it be?

As such the red string you describe should be further evaluated to rule out GIT bleed .
Your doctor may advise a blood test called FOBT .Fecal occult blood test is a check for hidden (occult) blood in the stool (feces).
However some foods like tomato can also be responsible for this .
However if you have previous history of blood in stool further investigations like FOBT should be done .

What is GIT bleed? What is occult blood and what are causes?
Expert:  Onlinedoc replied 7 years ago.
Gastrointestinal (GIT) bleeding- Lower GIT bleeding can cause red discolouration in stool like in patients with Anal fissure or hemorrhoids .
When the bleeding is not clear and doubtful it is called occult blood .(Hidden blood)
