This answer was rated:

My TSH is 0.02 but all of my symptoms are hypothyroid not hyper but my doctor is treating me for hyper - I am getting concerned with the extreme fatigue and hair loss. Can you be hyperthyroid but have all symptoms of hypothyroid?

welcome to JA,

what symptoms and tests make you feel you have hypothyroidism can you explain ?
Customer: replied 7 years ago.
Extreme fatigue, hair is brittle (no oil), hair loss, weight gain. Fatigue is the worse and feel like I am dragging my body around.

Thanks for input,

yes these symptoms do occur mostly in hypothyroidism.

you have told me that you have been treated as hyperthyroidism but drugs you mentioned like levoxyl and cytomel they are given for hyporthyroidism.

your tests TSH levels are 0.02 which indicate that you have hyperthyroidism.

can you give me some more information regarding this.

Customer: replied 7 years ago.

Yes, I was originally diagnosed with hypothyroid thus the medications listed above. Due to an escalation of the fatigue and weight gain, I went to endocrinologist who diagnosed me with hyperthyroid but I don't have symptoms of hyperthyroid, so the confusion and question of why I would exhibit hypothyroid symptoms with hyperthyroid condition.

Thanks for input,

what medicine you are currently taking ?

when was your last thyroid test done ?

Generic synthroid 88 / once daily

Thanks for input,

most of your symptoms that you mentioned like fatigue, hair loss, dry skin can occur with this medicine(synthyroid)

while weight gain does not occur with this medicine.

so i would prefer to have your thyroid function tests rechecked to see if still there is hyperthyroidism or hypo.

I hope this answers your question.

This was no help at all..I feel like I have wasted your time and mine.

Thanks for input,

I will try to answer it again for your satisfaction.

the symptoms you told me are mostly of hypothyroidism.

you were started treatment for hypothyroidism with thyroxine like drugs.

but you still have the symptoms of hypothyroidism.

your blood test is showing a picture of hyperthyroidism.

you said they started some treatment for hyperthyroidism( what was the medicine which was started for this).

In my opinion this test can be false and needs to be rechecked as your weight gain is more likely due to hypothyroidism while other symptoms can be due to either hypo or due to thyroxine side effects.

I hope this helps.
