In 1955,when my son was 1 year old, a doctor gave radium treatments

Customer Question

In 1955,when my son was 1 year old, a doctor gave radium treatments to his Thymus gland because it was causing his head to lean to one side. Two years after having this done I read an article that stated that in later years he would develop thyroid cancer. Due to having terrible sinus infections con-
stantly he is now on iv/ig infusions. Is there a form of raw thymus that
he can take to help him or what are your suggestions for a very worried
mother?

Hi, there is a slight increase in thyroid cancers in people who got thymus radiation. There is no thymus medication to take. What we do is monitor patients who had radiation with yearly thyroid ultrasounds or scans to detect an early cancer.

Thank you so much for your answer. It gives me some satisfaction and we plan on having a thyroid ultrasound in the near future. Mrs. Nolia LeBlanc
