I have a pain in on the left side of my lower back. Does not hurt to bend over, but when I try to lay down, breathe in deeply, cough, or even beltch the pain feels like someone just stabed me. the pain has been going on for about 3 days. What could it be?

Hello;Thank you for writing in today. Based on the information you have presented, I do not think this is anything ominous. This is most likely due to some muscle strain. This type of strain occurs when muscle fibers are torn. Muscle strain accounts for the majority of back pain. The activities you describe as exacerbating your pain complaints would also exacerbate a low back strain in some patients. At this point, I would recommend an evaluation by your provider. Any low back pain should be evaluated by a professional to ensure that there are no neurological deficits or other underlying issue. Also, a provider will want to assess if your pain is actually caused by a nerve problem. Generally, low back pain does not require any diagnostic exams. Usually a simple office visit will be sufficient. Finally, you may actually need some anti-inflammatory medications or physical therapy if this continues to be an issue. Your provider will be able to discuss your treatment options. I hope this helps. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please let me know. Lisa
