If an ALT (SGOT) has an normal range of 2-40 and my husbands test result is 91 what could be the cause of the elevation?
Gender: MaleAge: 39 Already Tried: avoided alchol and tylonol for the past two years. started exercising more and changed diet to no fried foods to lower cholesterol suceeded in that but this test result continues to be elevated
Hello,
Welcome to Just Answer and thanks for your question. Some of the things that can cause higher than normal ALT are alcohol, cirrhosis, hepatitis, fatty liver disease, Wilson's disease (a hereditary problem of copper transport), hemochromatosis, celiac disease, and even exercise. It's impossible to say without some more testing what is causing the increase.
This is the third abnormal test in the past year and a half. what should the doctor be advising him to do besides the things that we already tried?
If all his other tests are normal, he should just keep on doing what he is doing. We really don't get too excited and look for a cause until liver enzymes are 2-3 times the upper limit of normal. (Yes, I see he is approaching it). If damage was caused by drinking and Tylenol, then there may be cirrhosis. That damage to the liver may not clear up or it could improve very, very slowly. Usually there are changes in all the liver enzymes though, not just ALT.
