I had surgery to repair a right lateral abdominal incisional hernia at the site of my appendectomy scar Friday morning 9/25/09 at 10:00 AM. the next day (Saturday) I started itching lightly in various places on my body including my scalp. I also noticed that the area around my incision was red and hot. I thought this was from the surgery and inflammation. Today the itching is much worse. I itch all over my body and the site of my incision is very red and the redness has migrated away from the site and is creeping up my stomach. I sent my daughter to the store for some Diphenhydramine. I took the recommended dose of 2-25 mg capsules 2 hours ago and the itching was not relieved at all. My surgery used Dermabond to close the skin. After some research on the Web I believe that I am having an allergic reaction to the Dermabond. Can you confirm or refute the diagnosis and give me a course of action please. The itching seems to be getting worse every hour.Thank YouCliff Young

Hello,Your symptoms appear to be due to an allergic reaction. However the cause is not clear. As it is spreading you need to get a check up by doctor. The cause needs to be determined. You can need prescription grade antihistamine, steroids too to control it.I hope this information will be helpful. Please ask if you need any clarification.Best wishes.
Do I need to go to the emergency room or go to a promt care facility in the morning ?
When the redness & itching are spreading , I feel you can go to ER for a check up.
