I have suffered from oesophageal spasm for years, and am taking 40mg Nexium as a result of endoscopy performed in 1998. This is great, but now sometimes food won't go into my stomach, and builds up in the oesophagus. This is quite painful, and I end up bringing the food back up to get relief. This doesn't happen all the time. Any ideas about what could cause this?

DearCustomer
Greetings and welcome to justanswer,
what is your age/sex?
Do you have any gastric ulcer?
any associated vomitting?
did you have the investigations like ebdoscopy or barium swallow recently?
I am 58, female, and as I mentioned in my question, I had an edoscopy in 1998. I don't have an ylcer ( that I know of) and the vomitting is only to get rid of the food that builds up in the oesophagus.
Thank you for the information,
I just wanted to confirm when you had the recent endoscopy. The endoscopy in 1998 is a bit older more than ten years from now.
The esophageal spasm is a common problem which may be associated with such symptoms experienced by you.It is a treatable condition. The medical and surgical methods are used for controlling the symptoms.
You do need to take the proton pump inhibitors which will releive the symptoms.
The use of calcium channel blocker drugs like diltizem and antidepressant drugs like imipramine is also helpful.
You may also have the repeat endoscopy done to know any associated esopheal cancer or growth which may be associated after consulting your gastroenterologist.
If the medical therapy fails then the surgical options like myotomy may be considered to control the symptoms.
