Customer Question

I have a constant burning sensation on the inner part of my left calf. The pain is there day and night. There is some redness. I do not have a blood clot. I am diabetic. I am taking an antibiotic and a pill for pain, but nothing seems to make the pain go away. This is not the first time I have had this pain. Can you tell me what it is?

Response From Expert

Do you have pain in the back of the thigh, or in the bottom of the foot?

To what did your doctor prescribe the antibiotics -- did they feel this was an infection?

How many days has it been since you started the antibiotics?

No pain in the thigh other than a cramp every now and then. The doctor prescribed the antibiotics because she felt it was an infection, specifically mentioning cellulitis. I ahve been taking the antibiotics for 3 days. By the way, it does not look like cellulitis.

Response From Expert

OK.

Did your doctor do a doppler study to rule out the blood clot?

And when you have had the pain in the past, how long did the pain last?

Had a DOPPLER, NEGATIVE. The pain lasted for several weeks. I am also on coumadin. I have had blood clots in the past and I have a vena cava filter in my chest

OK.

Well, certainly then that ruled out one of the potential causes for this pain.

And cellulitis (as well as phlebitis) would be treated by the antibiotics.

Sometimes, pain in the calf can be from irritation of the nerve in the area, which can come from many reasons such as compression in the lower back, within the muscle itself, or due to a neuropathy (such as from diabetic neuropathy). Of course, it is unusual for diabetic neuropathy to be so specific in a calf, and have similar pains in that specific area in the past. And redness would not be typical symptom of nerve irritation.

So this is a bit tough to figure out, but should the burning sensations not improve with your medications -- testing with EMG tests can help to see if this could be a muscle / nerve issue in the leg.
