I have had sever cramping and pain in my upper middle belly most nights (but not all) for almost two weeks. In the day I feel ok (just a little tender in the tummy if I woke the night before) and go to sleep ok but wake after a few hours with sever pain and diarrhea. I feel like I need to throw up, but only have on one occasion, which didnt relieve the symptoms. I have no heartburn, and can not link the attacks with a type of food. My doctor has checked me for pregnancy and UTI, negative, suspects virus but Im wondering why the pain only occures at night? What else could it be and what can I do in the mean time to relieve the pain and get some much needed sleep?! Thank you, Jade

Greetings.
Is the diarrhea always or occasionally accompany the pain?
How severe is the pain?
Do you have bloating or gas?
Is it a watery diarrhea with foul smell?
Were any treatment done?
Was a stool examination done?
Are you stressed?

The diarrhea always accompanies pain but is sometimes more sever than others. I feel very gassy with foul smelling burps and wind. The pain feels very sever, I cannot sleep or lay down once pain begins. The stools have become more watery and smelly as time has progressed. No treatment was given, just pregnancy and urine test and Dr felt my tummy and said it felt ok. I dont feel stressed but tis getting to the point where Im becoming anxious before bed in anticipation of another horrible night!
Hello Jade,
A mid abdomen severe pain, diarrhea, gas, foul smelling burps and winds point to the small intestine (terminal part) or colon (large bowel) problem. The diagnostic considerations would be;
1) Diverticulosis
2) Parasitic infestations
3) Recurrent appendicitis
4) Bowel infection
The severity of pain and this going on for almost two weeks warrant further investigations like;
1) Ultrasound
2) CT scan of the abdomen
3) Urine for 5-HIAA
4) Stool examination and culture
Periodicity and night pain is usually not a classical presentation of intestinal diseases. A duodenal ulcer do has night pain but diarrhea is unlikely with it. So, just by the periodicity or its timing, no diagnostic clues can be gathered firmly.
You may try meanwhile antacids like Tums or Maalox and acid blocker like prilosec. Increasing fiber in the diet and taking yogurt and Probiotics (do not need prescription), may be beneficial.
