I'm 7.5 weeks pregnant and stepped on what looked like a dirty, dusty plastic-covered wire lying on the street on Sunday. I checked and have not had a tetanus booster in 10 yrs. I was given the series as a child. On Monday, my local doctor said the wound was superficial and not infected. He said my chances of getting tetanus were very slim. The site of the wound on my foot is still very sore, even though it looks like it's healing. I have had a sore neck for two days now, which may be from sleeping wrongly but I'm not sure. I also have been fighting off a cold since yesterday. My asthma was a aggravated enough to use my inhaler two days ago. I have moderate asthma and am a nervous wreck because I know that if I do get tetanus, I (and the baby) am dead. Do I insist on the booster now, or take my chances and wait another 7 weeks? Also, if the wound heals completely, am I considered out of danger?

Hello, Welcome to just answer, As you doctor has told you that yours chances of getting tetanus are very slim. Do not worry you are not in danger. A tetanus booster is completely safe in pregnancy. To be on safer side you can take a booster dose now. There are no ill effects to the fetus from this vaccine. Please visit this link for complete guide for vaccination in pregnancy: http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/pubs/preg-guide.htm Thanks
Hi Doctor,I'm not sure I understand. You are agreeing with my doctor saying I'm not at risk and shouldn't worry, but on the other hand you are disagreeing with him saying I should get the booster now as a preventative measure? Also, I wanted to know if the wound heals if I am out danger? Thanks
No it is not like that tetanus can occur even if wounds heal. I said chances are very less but to be on safer side you can take a booster dose now. There is no harm in taking a booster dose as a preventive measure. Thanks
Ok, I will go and insist on receiving the booster. He didn't want to give it to me because I'm in my first trimester of pregnancy and was worried it could harm the development of the baby. Were his concerns justified? Thanks
You can take booster. There are no harms. Thanks

Hi Doctor,I got the Td booster this morning, but I realised that it has been more than 72 hours since the injury. It has been appx 3.5 full days. Is the booster still effective in preventing tetanus from this injury?

FYI, after telling my local doctor about the lack of CDC contraindication during pregnancy he thanked me for doing the research for him. He admitted he really didn't know the risks of the booster, and only told me not to take the booster because pregnant women aren't supposed to receive anything, just "bread and water." Had my doctor been more informed, I could've gotten the booster earlier. So, the CDC information you sent was very helpful.G-D must have sent you to advise me. Thank you!
