I have been having some Blood Pressure Issues and Heart Rate issues for about 3 -4 weeks. I started out with high BP 160 / 90. At this time, my Heart Rate was also high - about 90 - 100. My Dr. prescribed a Beta Blocker in addition to my regular BP medication (160 Diovan) The Beta Blocker is Altonolel (I have been taking 25 mg). My BP is now very low in the afternoons (I take medication about 6:30am) my BP is around 107 / 63. My Heart rate is also low (around 50). I often feel light headed. I am concerned about this. I would like to cut the Altonolel down to 12.5mg. Does this sound like a solution? Thank you.
Gender: FemaleAge: 61 Already Tried: I take 160 mg Diovan daily and started 25 mg.Altonolel on August 3rd. I have not felt good since being on the Beta Blocker -- lightheaded and slightly nauseus. I have started walking about 2 - 3 miles every morning and hope that this will help my BP and I would like to stop taking the Alotonel soon. Wondering about cutting back to 12.5mg tomorrow -- perhaps the lightheadedness will go away????
DearCustomer
Greetings and welcome to justanswer,
what is your age/sex?
How long are you having high blood pressure?
What is current blood pressure and heart rate?
I am a 61 year old female. I have had high BP for about 3 - 5 years. I took 80mg Diovan for a couple of years and in January '09 it was increased to 160mg. The new addition of Altonolel (beta blocker) 25 mg. was August 3, 2009. I have not felt well since starting it but my BP has gone down -- I believe that it is perhaps too low now, as is my Heart Rate. Presently my BP is 117 / 63 and my Heart Rate is 53. My BP is likely to be around 138 / 75 by 6am tomorrow and my Heart Rate will likely be about 65 - 70. (I am going by what has been going on for the past week or so.) Wondering if perhaps the addition of excercise will allow me to decrease and eventually stop the Beta blocker.
Thank you for the information,
The blood pressure of 107/63 which you had and the current BP of 117/63 is not too low to worry about as it is i the normal range.
The heart rate of 53 bpm is slightly low and is likely to be due to the side effect of the drug atenolol which is a beta blocker.
You may decrease the dose to half the present dosage which you are taking if your heart rate remains at this and you have symptoms. It may help you in decreasing the symptoms experienced by you.
Let me know if you have any doubt.
Thank you!
Do you feel that this low Heart Rate is the cause of the lightheadedness and slight nausea? My GP physicians comment was that "my body would adjust" to this. It has been since 8/3/09 that I have had this -- I feel pretty good in the morning, when both my BP and my HR are higher, by afternoon and evening, I am not feeling well and my BP and HR are much lower. I don't like the way that I am feeling by afternoon nearly every day.
thank you for the enquiry,
The hypotension and certain drugs may cause the symptoms of light headedness and dizziness due to decreased blood supply to the brain. The body's homeostatic mechanism will slowly adjust to the new drugs and such bp and heart rate and you will again feel better.
The orthostatic hypotension may also cause such lightheadedness. The antihypertensive drugs are also associated with the symptoms of lightheadedness.
You may try the caffeine and other exercise measure which may temporarily increase your heart rate and help you feel better if the symptoms are severe during the afternoon. The other way is to take the atenolol tablet in two divided doses of 12.5mg each as this will not cause your symptoms to appear in the afternoon if you take the drug in the morning. The reduction in dose may be recommended if the symptoms are not controlled.
